AGATHA (2015)

Timothy Vandenberg’s short film AGATHA proves promising as it delivers chills in it’s 8 minutes of screen time.

Official Synopsis: “The orphan train comes daily, spilling hundreds of children onto the streets of Pennsylvania in the late 1800’s. Desperate and alone, the penniless 7 year old Sophie, entrusts an older woman who hires her to bring food each night to someone living in her attic. There is just one rule: Do not pass the serving table….EVER. As time passes, the child’s curiosity grows bold; drawing her closer to discovering the truth behind the prisoner.”

Wow wow wow! I love short films, often more than feature length films, and AGATHA is a perfect example of why. In only eight minutes it delivered an entire story line, with little dialogue, perfect suspense, and excellent use of score. I especially enjoyed the fact that this was set in the 1800’s which is not common in horror shorts. The costumes and settings were perfect, as well as the sound effects; such as the creaky stairs, and horse feet trotting on cobble stone. The viewer also needs to pay attention to the details in this short, such as the young girl’s boots, as they prove to be important in the final scene.

I watched this short twice out of sheer enjoyment for the classic way it was delivered. Just pure creepiness, and allowance of the setting, situation, and expression to provide the story, without unneeded dialogue and cliche music.  I found myself wishing that there was more of this film for me to enjoy! Any self-respecting horror fan would do well to watch this short, and relish the old-timey “charm” of this creation.
