Drop Toe Hold – Anxious Friend (2019)

Back today with something a little bit unique for ScareTissue but at the same time super exciting. I wasn’t quite sure how to categorize this so I’m going with three all at once: Reviews – 2019, Short Films and a newly created category: Music. Introducing… Drop Toe Hold.

Drop Toe Hold - Anxious Friend

Drop Toe Hold, I’ve come to find out, is a band on a mission. Their project consists of music, photography, film and writing. They have released the first part of their music video series entitled Anxious Friend and have asked us to review it. Their goal is to release one song per month along with an accompanying music video and photo that tells the story of a very dark and disturbed character. This is the first in the series and boy… did they nail it.

Check out the video below and keep reading for my thoughts / review.

Drop Toe Hold – Anxious Friend Review

Let’s start out with the band name – LOVE IT. If you don’t know it yet, I’ve been a pro wrestling fan probably longer than I’ve even been a horror fan. If you’re not familiar, the drop toe hold is an old school wrestling move so right out of the gate I’m a fan purely based on the choice of band name. The video for Anxious Friend was written and directed by Anthony White (Instagram.com/Anthony_s_white). The concept of the character and photography aspect was created Christine Hordeman (Instagram.com/chordeman). All music was written by Jim Regan, Sean Sullivan and Jason Rahn (Instagram.com/droptoeholdband).

I’ve got to say that this is a REALLY slick looking little video and I’m hooked from this first ‘episode’. We don’t get too much in terms of plot but we’re shown a gal (Juliana Calvani), clearly scared, running away from something. She’s bloody. She’s battered. She’s wearing not a lot (big fan by the way – she’s smoking hot!) We then get some pretty cool ‘horror movie’ stuff including a baby with worms, a guy in a spooky mask, a bad ass looking weapon and some Saw-esque overhead shots of a grimy bathroom. She has a run in with the villain but he chooses to do her no harm and turns and walks away.

I’ve got to say – this is a brilliantly made video. It looks like it’s straight out of a high budget horror flick. The lighting is awesome, the characters are great and like I mentioned before the weapon is bad ass. Purely from a ‘story line’ perspective I’m really looking forward to see how this goes.

Now, since this is a really a music video, let’s talk about the music. It too is pretty bad ass. I’m an old guy so my references are going to be a bit dated but the best way I can describe the sound of Drop Toe Hold is a mix between Alice in Chains, Local H and Lincoln Park. That’s my way of saying they sound really, REALLY good. This is an album that I’d buy just based on the strength of this first single. I wasn’t able to find the lyrics on the web so I’m not sure if they’re part of the overall story, but I can only imagine they are. I’ll see if I can’t find them and I’ll update this post.

The follow up to Anxious Friend titled The Long Weak, is set for release on September 27th, 2019. I don’t know about you but I’m all in and pumped to see what the next ‘installment’ brings us.

I've been a fan of horror and slasher movies for as long as I can remember. I consider the original Halloween to be the best horror movie of all time and my guilty pleasure horror flick would be The Exorcist III. You can find me on Twitter at @406Northlane or TikTok @406Northlane where I'm sure I'll offend you at least once a day.
