Self Storage (2012) – Get Coned Productions Debut

Get Coned Productions

For this week’s #ShortMovieMonday I’m taking a look at the first movie from film production company Get Coned Productions called Self Storage.  It stars Mitchell Herrin and Christopher Hough and tells the story of an entertainer who gives an interview to a local TV station.  When the interviewer calls into question the popularity of the entertainer and the validity of the act, the entertainer decided to make a change.

SPOILER ALERT: This review WILL talk openly about the plot of the film.  If you want to experience the film as it was intended watch it before reading this review.  Full film is embedded at the end of this post.

THE PLOT: We start with a voice over telling “the puppet man” that he did a great job and that “the magician” is next up.  Another performer, we’ll call her “Girl”, gives praise to the Puppeteer pining about how she can’t get the audience to react to her at all.  We then roll right into the interview between local TV interviewer David (Christopher Hough) and Vince The Magnificent (Mitchell Herrin).  David tells Vince that he should consider “changing it up” a bit and that leads Vince down the path of insanity / bitterness / rage.

The middle section of the film shows Vince descending into madness (that may be a stretch, but I think that’s what they’re going for) and we see him enter his self storage facility where he’s got a drugged Dave tied up.  We know he’s been drugged because we see the clearly labeled “ETHER” on the table.  I couldn’t help to think of the generically labeled ACME stuff from the Wile E. Coyote cartoons here.

As David wakes up, Vince tells him about how his interview, “Stole everything from me.”  He then proceeds to tell David that he did in fact need a new puppet for his act.  He takes David’s blindfold off and we’re shown some horrific images of the “puppet” that Vince has been working on which is built out of human remains. Vince re-ethers David and the film ends with him coming toward the camera (David) with a scalpel.  Post credits we see Vince with “Vinnie” the puppet.

THOUGHTS: There are some really good things going on here.  We’re obviously watching a low budget effort but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a bad thing.  Mitchell Herrin does an outstanding job ratcheting up the creep factor here.  I’m not sure if it was intentional or not, but I also really liked the local TV feel that we got from the interview.  The Interviewer David (Christopher Hough) essentially throws Vince under the bus and I can totally see some local TV anchor doing this.

The audio here is clearly both the best and worst thing in the film.  We get some awesome voice overs and sound effects that are able to convey rather quickly just why Vince is pissed off and what’s happened to him since the interview.  On the other hand, there’s some pretty terrible sound quality both in the outside scenes and during the interview itself.

I’m not QUITE sure what’s going on with Vinnie the puppet.  I’m assuming that Vince has sliced and diced David and made him a PART of the puppet but we’re not shown very much.  I’m also not quite sure why Vince is shown to be what looks like cleaning the floor as he’s chatting with David.  It’s creepy for sure, but I’m not sure why those choices were made.

Self Storage has a running time of about 7:30 and that includes the credits at the end.  All in all it’s a solid first effort and I’m seeing enough good here to be excited for their subsequent projects.  Take a few minutes to watch the film below and let us know what you think.  You can find Get Coned Productions on their Facebook fan page where you can learn not only about Self Storage but their subsequent projects Language Of The Sick and Secret Family Recipe. I've been a fan of horror and slasher movies for as long as I can remember. I consider the original Halloween to be the best horror movie of all time and my guilty pleasure horror flick would be The Exorcist III.
