Review & Recommendation
Before I get started, I’m going to give a SPOILER WARNING. If you want to watch the full film without knowing what’s coming you can watch it below. Just come back when you’re done!
Still with me? OK.
Voyeur is an 18 minute (ish) horror film shot completely on a cell phone as an experiment by director Dakota Thomas. It was an experiment that, for the most part, was very successful. With maybe one exception this doesn’t look like it’s shot on a cell phone and it’s got a simply incredible score. It’s very very CSI-esque and it sounds a lot like the soundtrack from Beverly Hills Cop (not the funny stuff… the detective stuff). Not sure how else to describe it but that’s exactly what I thought of the first time I watched it.
So the main character, we’ll call him Dude, wakes up at 9:00 and starts to go about his day (night). He washes his face, brushes his teeth (with far too much toothpaste) and gets ready. To this point if it weren’t for the creepy music this would be straight out of a vloggers “day in the life” video. He then proceeds to wash off a bloody knife that happens to be sitting in his bedroom.
We’re nine minutes into this 18 minute short and we’ve watched a guy get ready, wash a knife and drive across town. It’s not bad but I did find myself looking at the run time and hoping stuff would start happening. Dude drives across town to find Girl taking a dip in her pool. He proceeds to watch her swim until she gets a phone call and goes inside to take a shower.
While she’s showering, we’re shown Dude entering the house through the garage and proceeds to enter the bathroom where she’s showering. I realize I’m a bit of a cynic but I’d just like to ask… Who goes into the shower with their garage wide open and the lights on? With the door into the house unlocked? I’ve got to say she had it coming. As you may have guessed, Dude waits till she’s done showering and then murders her in the shower. It’s a pretty gruesome scene that has some outstanding effects that will make gorehounds happy.
Voyeur is wonderfully constructed and shot, especially when you take into consideration that it was done on a cell phone. It’s acted well and has an outstanding score. I think it could have been trimmed from 18 minutes to probably 10 but I will say those first couple of minutes, based on the music, really did build a great sense of suspense. Well worth the time to check out which you can do below. Recommend.
