It is not only because of the horror films: in fact, dolls are already spooky and weird on a psychological level. They are inanimate objects who look like people but at the same time are mindless. They don’t have emotions, or empathy and look rather cold-minded. And this is what makes them so disturbing and weird. The films in this list will scare the living hell out of you. Enjoy this pick!
Child’s Play (1988)
This film was the debut of the doll Chucky, one of the most popular on-screen killer dolls. Six-year-old Andy Barclay (Alex Vincent) thinks his Chucky doll is very strange as if it were alive. Of course, no one believes him. Nor did they believe him when his babysitter fell out of a window and he told his mother and detective Mike Norris that Chucky did it. A toy can’t do that. However, if the toy has the soul of a brutal serial killer, it may be possible. Andy is the only one who guesses that the innocent-looking doll Chucky is connected to the series of horrifying murders in Chicago. But the worst will begin a little later when the soul of the maniac decides to move from a useless toy into the body of a living person. Then the serial killer will gain more power. In 2019 Lars Klevberg directed the remake of the 1988 film with the same name.
Dolly Dearest (1991)
Elliot Wade (Sam Bottoms) is the new owner of a Mexican toy factory. Together with his wife Marilyn (Denise Crosby) and children, he moves into his new home. The business promises to be profitable, but who would have thought that such a venture of the head of the family for all its members? Not far away there was an archaeological excavation, during which a heavy slab fell on the archaeologist. And under that slab, an evil spirit languished for years. Now he’s out in the wild and living in a toy factory. And no one would have ever known about it if the entity hadn’t started doing something terrible. One day, Elliot’s daughter Jessica received a lovely doll Dolly as a gift. But she couldn’t play with it: there was a cruel spirit in this doll. And the intentions of this spirit are terrible.
Bride of Chucky (1998)
Bloodthirsty doll Chucky appeared on the screens in 1998, and this movie is her fourth “outing”. According to the plot, a strange and almost completely broken toy is acquired by a flighty and fond of black magic Tiffany Valentine. The girl revives Chucky and even finds him a bride. But this boy doesn’t seem to be satisfied or want something more. He brutally murders his new mistress and puts her soul into a bride doll.
Also, Chucky wants his human body back as a homicidal maniac, which is buried in a grave somewhere in New Jersey. It’s not easy for two little dolls to get there and accomplish everything they set out to do, so they take a runaway couple, Jade and Jesse, hostage. Did these two, when they wanted to go on a romantic trip, know what their trip would turn into? And there are bloody scenes, chases, and fear to come.
The Doll Master (2004)
Dolls are beautiful, and some of them are very much like people. And that’s what five young people find out. It began innocently and quietly. They came to the exhibition of dolls and met a world-famous puppeteer, who offered them to become guests in his huge luxury mansion. Of course, the boys agreed, because not everyone can see real masterpieces of art and creations of the master.
Once in the house of the puppeteer, the heroes came in full delight, because there is no such collection of unique exhibits anywhere. But soon they all regretted that they had accepted the invitation. The master continued to create in his room behind a closed door, and at night the mansion was filled with ghosts and ominous sounds. But who could all these unaccustomed souls belong to? And what will become of the main characters? Be sure to find out!
