Turbo Kid To Sundance; Lucky McKee To Direct Segment In TOH

So it’s been a pretty good week for Hollywood based Epic Pictures.  First, the company is looking to strike gold with another horror anthology next year entitled Tales of Halloween that already features horror directors Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw 2,3, and 4), Neil Marshall (The Descent, Dog Soldiers), and others next year.  (Epic Pictures acquired V/H/S at the Sundance Film Festival in 2012.)  It looks like May director Lucky McKee has also signed on to direct a segment and shooting begins in the coming weeks.  May is a personal favorite of mine (and a cult hit), and I was very excited upon receiving this news.

Tales of Halloween (2015)

But before I could even get this news out, I was handed a second press release from Epic that announced that their upcoming film (Turbo Kid) will debut at Sundance 2015!  The film is an 1980s throwback film about a boy and his BMX in a post apocalyptic world.  I’m salivating at the thought of the BMX Bandits-Mad Max film and will be definitely checking this out.  Turbo Kid stars Munro Chambers and Michael Ironside.

You can read about both films below, and check out the first images released from Turbo Kid.

Epic Pictures Adds Another Acclaimed Director to Horror Anthology TALES OF HALLOWEEN

Lucky McKee joins renowned filmmakers

Darren Lynn Bousman, Axelle Carolyn, Adam Gierasch, Andrew Kasch, Neil Marshall, Mike Mendez, Dave Parker, Ryan Schifrin, John Skipp, Paul Solet

Hollywood, Calif., Dec. 2, 2014 – Epic Pictures Group announced the addition of Lucky McKee to the highly anticipated horror anthology Tales of Halloween.

“I’m delighted to be included with so many filmmakers I respect and admire,” said Mckee”. “The anthology format shows how pliable the horror genre is. Each artist on this project is stretching the possibilities to their limits. For die-hard horror fans and general audiences, this is sure to be an evergreen title for many Halloweens to come.”

McKee and ten directors have joined forces with Epic Pictures under the name The October Society to create a series of interconnected stories, each with a unique Halloween theme. They include Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II, III & IV), Axelle Carolyn (Soulmate), Adam Gierasch (Night of the Demons), Andrew Kasch (Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy), Neil Marshall (The Descent), Mike Mendez (Big Ass Spider!), Dave Parker (The Hills Run Red), Ryan Schifrin (Abominable), John Skipp (Stay at Home Dad), and Paul Solet (Grace). Directors Kasch and Skipp are to co-direct one of the short films together.

Currently in production in Los Angeles, Axelle Carolyn created the concept and brought the filmmakers together for this unique production.  Tales of Halloween is being produced by Patrick Ewald and Shaked Berenson of Epic Pictures Group along with Mike Mendez and Axelle Carolyn.

“We are more than thrilled to have Lucky round out our team of talented directors for Tales of Halloween,” said Epic Pictures Group CEO Patrick Ewald.  “Lucky will share his unique point-of-view to the project that will be exciting to audiences of the horror genre.”

Ten stories will be woven together by their shared theme of Halloween night in an American suburb, where ghouls, imps, aliens and axe murderers appear for one night only to terrorize unsuspecting residents.

The directors have created a manifesto with rules to create their films based on the values of Halloween night. The antithesis of the Dogme 95 manifesto, the directors will not be frugal with special effects, props and musical score, and have already attracted notable talent in the horror genre, such as composers Frank Ilfman (Big Bad Wolves) and Joseph Bishara (The Conjuring).

TURBO KID to Debut at

2015 Sundance Film Festival

turbo kidMONTREAL – Dec. 5, 2014 – EmaFilms, T&A Films and Epic Pictures Group are pleased to announce that TURBO KID, a Canada-New Zealand co-production, will make its World Premiere at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival in the Park City atMidnight section.  The Festival takes place January 22 to February 1 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, Utah.

TURBO KID is a post-apocalyptic, BMX-powered, blood-splattered love story that follows the epic journey of an orphaned outcast reluctant to be a hero in the wasteland of an alternate future.

TURBO KID is written and directed by RKSS: Anouk Whissell, François Simard and Yoann-Karl Whissell.

“We always envisioned TURBO KID to be like some lost crazy kid’s movie from the 1980s that’s somehow has just been rediscovered,” said RKSS.  “We wanted a love story with the exploitation elements we grew up with, a post-apocalyptic scenario, over-the-top gore FX, super turbo explosions and a few BMX tricks for good measure. We were going for a retro inspired aesthetic, not just from an overall visual presentation, but from how the narrative unfolds. We wanted TURBO KID to appeal to a whole new generation of warped kids (and crazy adults).”

RKSS, also known as Roadkill Superstar, has written and directed over twenty short films, many of which have won awards at various festivals abroad, including LE BAGMAN, T IS FOR TURBO and DEMONITRON.  TURBO KID is their first film feature collaboration.

The film is produced by EMAfilms’ Anne-Marie Gélinas and Benoit Beaulieu and T&A Films’ Ant Timpson and Tim Riley and is executive produced by Jason Eisener (HOBO WITH A SHOT GUN), Epic Pictures Group’s Patrick Ewald and Shaked Berenson; Raven Banner’s Michael Paszt and Curious Films’ Matt Noonan.

T&A Films is a partnership between two New Zealanders – producer and distributor Ant Timpson and arts and entertainment lawyer Tim Riley.  Their most recent credits include HOUSEBOUND and ABCS OF DEATH 2.

EMAfilms’ Anne-Marie Gélinas and Benoit Beaulieu have partnered on various productions including the multi-nominated A BOTTLE IN THE GAZA SEA, which they co-produced with France and Israel, and Martin Villeneuve’s debut feature MARS & AVRIL.  MARS AND AVRIL premiered in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic in 2012. The film was also honored with 4 Genies nominations and 5 Jutra nominations in Canada.  Gélinas also served as a Line Producer on REBELLE (WAR WITCH), which received an Academy Award Best Foreign Film nomination in 2013, a Silver Bear Award in Berlinale in 2012 and Best Film and Best Actress at Tribeca in 2012.

I love horror movies, and I have since I was young. My favorite genre is the zombie genre, but it has completely been overdone in the last few years. I'm not a big fan of the horror movie formula, and I love it when a director turns it on its head.
