Horror has always been an inspirational genre – from spin-off console titles to some of the online slot games at this site, it has proven to reach far into the imagination of popular culture. Arguably none more so than the terrifying character of the It franchise – Pennywise the Dancing Clown – who is back on our screens later this year.
Indeed, on first glimpse, the new adaptation of Stephen King’s novel It looks even scarier than the original.
The trailer is the most viewed of all time and broke records by attracting almost 200 million views in just one day.
Due for release of September 8, at the moment, it doesn’t look as though It will have too many rivals that month, the sequel of Flatliners and Kingsman: The Golden Circle will be released but that’s long after this horror remake dons the silver screen.
You can’t help but notice how similar the trailer is to Stranger Things. An interesting characteristic given that the Netflix show’s creators wanted to adapt their TV series to the 90s mini-series of IT.
It is thought that the film will start with the disappearance of young Georgie Denbrough, played by Jackson Robert Scott, who has previously appeared in Criminal Minds.
As you can see, the trailer shows the energetic seven-year-old playing in the rain with his sailboat when he first encounters the evil Pennywise. Needless to say, things don’t exactly go swimmingly for little Georgie!
Disappearances in Derry, Maine, where he film is based, start to become more frequent and the locals are understandably growing worried and suspicious.
A group of misfits and bullied outcasts form a gang and call themselves “The Losers Club”. However, members of this faction soon start to notice strange happenings around Derry – namely hallucinations, red balloons and sightings of a certain creepy clown.
Pennywise is played by Bill Skarsgård, the brother of True Blood star Alexander and the son of Thor’s Stellan. Thus far, Bill’s main roles have come in Hemlock Grove in which he played Roman but his role in It may see him tipped for big things.
Much like the original, Skarsgård does not take on all the forms of the monster. The Leper, one of It’s more bizarre forms, is played by renowned creature actor Javier Botet, famed for his excellent yet terrifying roles in Rec and Mama.
But who is Skarsgård fighting against?
Members of the Losers Club include Finn Wolfhard of Stranger Things, Wolfhard plays Richie Tozier, the best friend of Georgie’s older brother. Georgie’s older brother, Bill Denbrough is played by Midnight Special star Jaeden Lieberher. Joining them is Wyatt Olef as Stan Uris, Sophia Lillis as Beverley Marsh, Jeremy Ray Taylor as Ben Hanscombe, Chosen Jacobs as Mike Hanlon and Jack Dylan Grazer as Eddie Kasbrak.
The film is a dark, fearsome, coming of age tale that will teach you about friendships and childhood insecurities…not mention running like hell from any creepy looking clown you may come across later in life!
Are you excited for It? Do you think it will surpass the original?
