#ShortMovieMonday makes a return this week with a film I discovered randomly on YouTube today.
The Little Witch is a 2 minute horror film adaptation of an old scary story. There are 2 sentences spoken the entire film, and the film special effects budget is not used on gore. Yet, it is one of the creepiest and haunting installments I’ve seen in the short film format.
The Little Witch is directed by Alasdair McBroom, and features images that appear to be a heartwarming story of a father and his daughter. But, without giving anything away (seriously….it’s a 2 minute video that you won’t regret watching), things are not as they seem. “It is an adaptation of a brilliant story that I first heard when I was about eight years old” writes McBroom. “…It scared the life out of me then. I like to think it’s based loosely on the legends of the Witches of Islandmagee in County Antrim, Northern Ireland (where it was filmed).”
One of the issues I have with many horror films today is that they equate gore with horror. The directors tip their hands way too soon, and by the time a payoff is near, I’m no longer in the element. As this film is only 2 minutes, the horror in it is only a few seconds. But it’s effective, and it’s completely out of left field. McBroom holds the secret in, and lets it go with such veracity that I was left with my jaw on my desk.
