The Platform (2019) is not the first movie that will come to mind when we think about psychological dystopian thriller. To be frank, I never thought I’d enjoy this movie when I saw it on Netflix’s Top 10 Movies. But it was probably one of the best decisions I’ve made. This movie hit me like a truck, and it’s not because it’s terrifying or emotional. It’s an excellent depiction of human nature, social class struggle, and the lengths people will go to for survival.
Sounds heavy for a dystopian film, right? It is, actually, but The Platform was able to show it in a way most viewers would understand. Since the movie is in Spanish, many people are looking for it on Spanish TV. But right now, it’s only available on Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video.
What Is The Platform About?
The Platform is about a strange prison called The Pit. It has hundreds of floors stacked on top of each other. In the middle, there’s a massive hole where a platform filled with food moves down level by level. The people at the top get to eat first, leaving little to nothing for those below. Every month, prisoners wake up on a new random level. So that means, sometimes they’re high, sometimes they’re low.
Throughout the film, we’ll see Goreng, a prisoner who thought it’s just going to be a typical stay. But then, reality caught up too fast and he realized the brutal reality of the system. The Platform is deeply disturbing but it’s a massive eye-opener.
It’s seriously a good film, and it’s a shame that it’s not available on other on-demand and traditional TV services like Planet DISH and others. But hopefully… soon.
Human Nature, Survival and Everything in Between
I won’t even lie — this movie made me think a lot. Growing up, I can say that I lived a privileged life, although we’re not rich rich. I was able to live a comfortable life, thanks to my parents, but when I watched this movie, I couldn’t help but think — what would I do if I ended up in The Pit?
Would I share my food? Would I turn selfish if I ended up on a lower level? The movie wasn’t just showing how unfair the system is. It literally forces you to question yourself and your beliefs. It’s easy to judge the characters from the outside, but when survival is on the line, morals can quickly fade. And the scariest part is, it’s really what’s happening in the world we are currently living in.
The unfortunate truth is that the resources are unevenly distributed and those at the top of the social class rarely consider those who are struggling below. It’s sad, frustrating, and brutal, but it’s the harsh truth. This movie is a powerful reminder of the society we live in, and most importantly, how this cycle can end if people were willing to work together and make the change.
I really hope that this movie becomes widely available on other platforms like DIRECTV because it deserves to be seen by many people. It’s the kind of movie that raises awareness and starts meaningful conversations with friends, family, and even strangers.
The Verdict
I would rate The Platform a 9/10. I loved everything about the movie, although there were some parts where I think it was dragged unnecessarily. But overall, it’s an extremely meaningful movie that anyone can learn from — especially if you want to get a glimpse of what it’s like to be at the bottom of the social class.
